Death Notice for John Stryjewski

The Rev. John Joseph Stryjewski, a senior priest of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mobile, died Saturday, at a nursing facility in Mobile. He was 70.

A native of Hempstead, N.Y., Stryjewski was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Mobile in June 1985 and served as pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Millbrook, Ala., until his appointment as pastor of St. John's Parish in Grand Bay in 1995.

In March 2001, he was appointed associate pastor of the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, where he also served as chaplain to both the Mobile Police Department and the Sacred Heart Residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor. He was appointed pastor of Shrine of the Holy Cross Parish in Daphne in 2003.

He was granted the status of senior priest for the archdiocese in February.

A member of the Order of Franciscan Minors, Stryjewski was ordained in May 1966 in Joliet, Ill. He taught at Archbishop Ryan High School in Philadelphia, and was a U.S. Air Force chaplain from 1978 to1985 and attained the rank of major.

He is survived by one sister, Patricia Kuster of Schenectady, N.Y.

The recitation of the Office of the Dead will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Shrine of the Holy Cross Parish, 612 Main St. in Daphne, where the funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow in the Priests' Section of Catholic Cemetery in Mobile.

Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in Mobile is handling arrangements.
